Still not job hunting yet [Mar. 20th, 2017|12:03 am]
wildcard9
Here is a two months later status update. The layoff occurred the day before Arisia, so I had that to buffer my immediate reaction to the event. Since then, I have been taking both in person and online seminars for various aspects of job hunting (networking, interviewing, negotiating, etc). I also worked with the outsourcing company to get myself a MUCH better resume than I would have gotten on my own. My time with the outsourcing company ends on March 31st, so that will also end the in person seminars with them (I can still do the online seminars for the rest of 2017, even though they are repeats of what I have done already).

I am finally feeling ready, or close to it, to start the job hunt. I will start seriously looking on April 3rd, my first weekday after my outsourcing program has ended. I want to stay local, find a job in Tewksbury or one of the surrounding towns. I will NOT take a job in Waltham again unless I hit a full year without a job; the commute drove me nearly insane before and I know it has only gotten worse since I last worked in Waltham.

I attended MarsCon, and will do PenguiCon as well at the end of April. I can do a number of panels there that would be professional development, and who know what contacts I can make that may lead to a job (although given the con is just outside of Detroit, most likely it would be a telecommute job). FuMPFest in mid-June will be my final travel con of the year; I am going to bite the bullet and say DragonCon is officially out this year so that the person I am staying with can find a replacement roommate. I may hit local cons during the second half of the year since going six months without a con may be too much for me (how did I ever survive on just Arisia and nothing else?). Boston Comic Con does not count, that is just a giant dealer's room; I would want something closer to what Arisia offers, even if it is on a smaller scale.

Laid off last week [Jan. 19th, 2017|06:13 pm]
wildcard9
Well, the decision to stay or go from my job has been made for me, I was laid off last Thursday. Right now, I am focusing on moving my doctors and dentist appointments up into January so I can do them before my health care coverage expires at the end of the month. Then I need to figure out what to do about that. I also need to do a new resume and work on my Linked In page. So I figure that I will be ready to start job hunting by the start of February. At least the separation check I got covers me for the last two weeks of this month.

While I am not job hunting, I plan to do the major decluttering that I keep putting off. It will give me something to do to keep my mind focused. While I have no plans to move, I won't rule out getting a job offer that is not local and requiring a move if I accept it. This is what comes from having friends who are in the Chicago area who may know of things there.

My plans for MarsCon, PenguiCon, and FuMPFest are unaffected, assuming that a new job won't prevent me from going on those trips. I figured DragonCon is out for this year, but that is still 8 months away so there is time for things to improve so I can still attend.

Fun times, but at least the work stress is now gone. Replaced by out of work stress, but that will eventually go away. I hope.

End of 2015 summary [Dec. 29th, 2015|10:16 am]
wildcard9
I am glad that 2015 is over. It was a year of mistakes. I didn't quit my job when I should have, and when I did finally turn in my notice in October, I got talked into staying there for another six months. At this time, I plan to give notice in April 2016, so when I leave for PenguiCon at the end of the month, I don't return there. But that means getting my resume back into shape, working on having a decent LinkedIn page, and actually having a plan to find a replacement job. I hate giving up the extra vacation time I currently have, but my sanity has to win out. All this is also dependent on the temporary assignment my team was given, it may improve things, or at least extend my staying there until end of June. But given all the infighting between groups and my constantly being caught in the middle, I don't foresee myself staying there for all of 2016.

Hitting the point of walking away from job [Feb. 19th, 2015|02:14 pm]

Things have hit the point where i am ready to just give my two weeks notice and walk away from my job, and worry about finding a new job later. Which I know is not a good thing to do in the current economy. But mentally, I can not stay here much longer. This place has advantages for commute and no fight for vacation time for cons, but that really is the only advantages I can still see staying here. That is not enough. I need to spend the time to redo my Linked In page and start getting my references in place.

2013 end of year post [Jan. 1st, 2014|09:08 pm]
wildcard9
Looks like it's been a year and a half since I posted here. 2013 was a roller coaster year for me. In and out of depression multiple times, took a two week trip to visit the India office for work, and got promoted at work. But work has gotten to the point where I need to leave to save my health and sanity. I have nothing lined up right now, and too many commitments for trips next year to make switching jobs now easy to do. As tempting as it is to just give notice and take a few months off, it took me nearly a year last time to find a new job, and that came about through pure good luck. So this is a damned if you do / damned if you don't situation for me. I anticipate that I will not be at my current job by the time summer comes around unless there is a SIGNIFICANT change to the amount of work we do and the size of the team (we are currently at half staff for what we need to do, and so much stuff backed up waiting testing that some of it can't wait any longer, but we don't have anyone available to do the testing). I think 2013 was the year that change was needed but didn't happen, so 2014 will have to be a year of change for my own well being.

It looks like I am starting to come out of the latest funk that I was in. Starting to make some plans to socialize again outside of cons. And starting to clean and declutter the condo (this is a long term project due to needing to reduce what I have by more than half, but first I need to see what I actually have in those boxes I haven't look inside in a few years due to being buried behind other boxes). Still vegging at home on the weekends but no longer vegging all day (going out from lunchtime until close to dinner). Given that all of my local friends have now moved to other states, I still call that a start.

Juggling for Software Engineers [Jul. 3rd, 2012|10:17 pm]
wildcard9
Almost hit the wall at work due to trying to juggle too much stuff at once. Had a talk with my boss, he is NOT seeing my performance going down, even if I feel like I am starting to drop things. He gave me a few ideas to avoid this becoming a problem, and we will discuss things in two weeks to see if I actually have too much on my plate. So problem adverted before it was actually a problem.

Back from Dragon*Con [Sep. 6th, 2011|07:04 pm]
wildcard9
I am home from Dragon*Con!! I have a bunch of stuff to do tonight, so Trav will air Shifting Gears for me tonight while I am running around doing stuff I need to tonight. I will be semi-lurking in IRC, talking when I am not running around here.

It was a good thing that I gave myself extra time for the trip home. The flight home left 45 minutes late due to bad weather in Atlanta, then had to do an extra half hour in the air to avoid bad weather along the way, and finally another extra 20 minutes circling Boston before we could land due to bad weather here. But other than those delays, the trip home went smooth.
